Which countries are in the European flag quiz?
All 49 states usually counted as European, not just the 27 EU members. That means microstates like San Marino, Liechtenstein and Andorra, the Balkans, the Caucasus edge, and countries most quizzes forget, such as Moldova and Belarus. The flags appear in random sets of 20.
It suits anyone who already knows the big flags and wants the next challenge. If you are starting from scratch, a few rounds of the world version first helps.

How do you earn the Europe Expert rank?
One point per correct flag, maximum 20. Up to nine points makes you a Tourist, 10 to 15 an Interrailer and 16 or more a Europe Expert. No time limit and no deductions for a wrong tap.
Each wrong answer is still useful, because the quiz reveals the correct country before moving on. Three rounds in a row and the Balkan tricolours finally stick.
Which European flags are easiest to confuse?
The wrong options are random European countries, so pairs like these can land in the same question. Learn the small differences and you have beaten most of the difficulty:
- Slovakia and Slovenia, both white-blue-red with a small coat of arms on the left
- Romania, Andorra and Moldova, three blue, yellow and red tricolours, two of them with a coat of arms
- Austria and Latvia, red-white-red in two different proportions and shades
- Ireland and Italy, mirror-image tricolours with orange versus red
- Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, five Nordic crosses in five colour pairs
Are all the flags in the quiz EU flags?
No, and that is the point. Europe is bigger than the European Union. Norway, Switzerland, the UK, Serbia, Ukraine, Albania and many more are not EU members but very much European, and they are all in the pool. Knowing the twelve-star EU flag will not help you here, because it never appears as a country.
Why do people play the European flag quiz?
The Eurovision final, a European Championship summer and the week before an Interrail trip all send a wave of players here. It is a classic last-lesson activity in geography classes across the UK and Ireland, where teachers put the quiz on the projector and let the class shout answers. Expats use it to show off their home region, football fans learn the flags of the teams they will meet in the group stage, and adults who were sure they knew Europe discover that Montenegro and Moldova have existed for a while. When you are done with the continent, the country flag quiz opens up the whole world and the US states quiz swaps flags for a map.
European flag quiz: frequently asked questions
How many European flags are in the quiz?
Forty-nine countries are in the pool, covering every sovereign state usually counted as part of Europe, including the microstates and the countries on the eastern edge. Each game shows 20 of them, drawn fresh every time you start a new round.
Why is the European flag quiz harder than the world flag quiz?
Because all four options on every question are European countries, and many European flags share colours and layouts. The world quiz also draws its options from one continent, but few continents have this many lookalikes: red-white-blue tricolours can mean half a dozen neighbours, so you need the details.
Does the quiz include the United Kingdom and Switzerland?
Yes. The pool is Europe as a continent, not the EU as a political union, so the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Serbia, Ukraine, Turkey and the rest all appear. Only the EU flag itself is excluded, because it does not belong to a country.
What is a good score on the European flag quiz?
Ten to 15 out of 20 is Interrailer, and 16 or more earns Europe Expert. The Balkans and the Nordic crosses cost most points, and a few rounds of practice usually lift your score.
Can I use the European flag quiz in a classroom?
Yes. It works on a projector or on each pupil's phone, needs no login and shows no pop-up ads between the questions. Teachers run it as a competition between tables, then use the lookalike flags to explain how neighbouring countries borrowed designs from each other.
Do I see new flags every time I play?
Yes, each round is a new random set of 20 from the 49. Play a handful of rounds and you will have met the whole continent, including the ones you had never heard of, such as Moldova's eagle or Montenegro's gold border.
